John Henry III, succeeded from William. He had been requested by the Scottish Government t o help in restoring order in that Kingdom, visited Alnwick Castle on September 23 1255, on hi s return from Scotland. In the Civil war, in which Simon de Montford opposed the King, Joh n de Vexcy wook his side of the rebels and fought at the Battle of Lewes in 1264. At the Bat tle of Evesham in 1265 which gave final victory to the King, John de Vescy was wounded and ta ken prisoner. Although he was allowed to go free, his estates were confiscated and by Act o f Parlament he was deprived of Alnwick Castle and the Barony. He thereupon organized anothe r revolt and seized the Castle by force, where he was beseiged by Prince Edward, and soon red uced to such straits that he had to surrender unconditionally. He was however, pardoned, an d was restored to his estates on payment of a fine. In 1279 he accompanied Prince Edward a s a Crusader to Palestine, and subsequently fought several campaignes in Prance. He died the re in 1288, leaving no son and was succeeded by his brother, William.
