Owain ap was born in 1071 in Arwystli, Montgomeryshire, Wales. Owain ap's father was Trahaearn ap Caradog , Prince of North Wales and his mother was Nesta verch Gruffudd. He had a brother named Llywarch ap. He was the younger of the two children. He had a half-brother and a half-sister, named Hugh and Nesta verch.
