Bertha de was born about 0800 in Tours, Touraine, France.  Bertha de's father was Hugues III Count of Upper Alsace and her mother was Bava (Ava).  Her paternal grandparents were Luitfride II Count of Upper Alsace and Hiltrude. She had two brothers and two sisters, named Luitfried III Count of Upper, Hugh Comte de, Ermengarde de and Aelis of Alsace &.  She was the third oldest of the five children.
