Rhys ap was born about 1035 in Deheubarth, Wales.  Rhys ap's father was Tewdwr "Mawr-The Great" ap Cadell , King S. Wales.  His paternal grandparents were Cadell ap Einion and Elinor verch Gwerystan. He had a brother and a sister, named Rhydderch ap and Elen verch.  He was the oldest of the three children.  He died in 1093 in Killed fighting Norman English in Brycheiniog, Wales.


Rhys ap's first family with Catrin verch Iestyn

‌Rhys ap and Catrin verch were married in a religious ceremony before 1084.  They had two sons named Hywel ap and Llewelyn Ddiriaid ap.


Rhys ap's second family with Gwladus verch Rhiwallon

They had a son and two daughters, named Gruffudd ap, Nest verch and Margred verch.
