Gilbert was born about 1298 in Of, St. Donat's, Glamorganshire, Wales.  Gilbert's father was (Sir Knight) John Stradling (Sir Knight) and his mother was Katherine De Grandison. He had a brother named Peter.  He was the older of the two children.

He had a biological daughter named Eleanor.
