William de was born about 1067 in Sawbridgeworth, Bishop's Stortford, Hertfordshire, England.  William de's father was Picot de Say , of Clun and his mother was Adeloia widow of William de Coimis.  His paternal grandfather was Robert FitzPicot de Say. He had two brothers named Robert FitzPicot de and Theodore de.  He was the second oldest of the three children.
