Rhys "Gryg" ap was born about 1150 in Dynevor Castle, Llandilo, Carmarthenshire, Wales.  Rhys "Gryg" ap's father was Rhys "Fychan" ap Gruffudd , Prince of Wales and his mother was Gwenllian verch Madog.  His paternal grandparents were Gruffudd ap Rhys , Prince of Deheubarth and Gwenllian verch Gruffudd; his maternal grandparents were Madog ap Maredudd , King of Powys and Susanna verch Gruffudd. He had a brother and four sisters, named Gruffudd ap, Gwenllian verch, Angharad (Ankaret) verch, Catrin verch and Margred verch.  He was the oldest of the six children.  He died in 1234 in Dynevor, Llandyfeisant, Carmarthenshire, Wales.  He was buried in St David's Cathedral, Pembrokshire, Wales.
