Gruffudd Ap was born in 1153 in Dynevor Castle, Llandilo, Carmarthenshire, Wales.  Gruffudd Ap's father was Rhys "Fychan" Ap Prince Of Wales and his mother was Gwenllian Verch Madog. He had six brothers and five sisters, named Rhys "Gryg" Ap, Anarawd Ap, Efa Ap, Howel Ap, Madog Ap, Maelgwn Ap, Angharad Verch, Gwenllian Verch, Catrin Verch, Margred Verch and Annest Verch. He had a half-brother named Hywel "Sais" Ap.  He died at the age of 48 on July 25th, 1201 in Strata Florida, Caronuwchclawdd, Cardiganshire, Wales.  He was buried in Strata Florida, Caronuwchclawdd, Cardiganshire, Wales.
