Gruffudd ap was born about 1071 in Dynevor Castle, Llandilo, Carmarthenshire, Wales.  Gruffudd ap's father was Rhys ap Tewdwr , King of Deheubarth and his mother was Gwladus verch Rhiwallon. He had two sisters named Nest verch and Margred verch.  He was the oldest of the three children. He had two half-brothers named Hywel ap and Llewelyn Ddiriaid ap.  He died after 1137.
