Thorer was born about 0860.  Thorer's father was Jarl Ragnvald I Eysteinsson the Wise of More Jarl and his mother was Countess of Moer Ragnhild Hilda Hrolfsson Countess of Moer. He had three brothers named Einar "Turf" Rognvaldsson Earl of, RolloI Hrolf and Hrollangr.  He was the second oldest of the four children.
