Gerald de was born about 1187 in Enniscorthy, Wexford, Ireland. Gerald de's father was Philip de Prendergast , Lord of Enniscorthy and his mother was Maude de Quincy , Heiress of Enniscorthy. His paternal grandfather was Maurice de Prendergast , Sir Knight; his maternal grandparents were Robert de Quincy , Lord of Buckley and Orabella Countess of Leuchars. He was an only child. eldest son (Gerald, founder of Enniscorthy Abbey, married 1st Matilda, daughter of Theobald le Botiller/Butler, and had a daughter Maria (married John de Cogan (died 1278), of Bampton, Devon), married 2nd Matilda, daughter of Richard de Burgo/Burgh and sister of the Earl of Ulster, and died 1251, having by her had a daughter Matilda (married Maurice de Rochfort).
