Gwenllian verch was born about 1120 in Caernarvonshire, Wales.  Gwenllian verch's father was Owain Gwynedd ap Gruffudd , King of Gwynedd and her mother was Gwladus verch Llywarch. She had a brother and two sisters, named Iorwerth Drwyndwn ap, Margred verch Owain and Gwenllian II verch.  She was the oldest of the four children. She had a half-sister named Angharad verch.
