EARLDOM of ORKNEY [NOR] - subject to King of Norway until after 1379
Sigurd I Riki, the Mighty, received the Earldom of Orkney and Shetland (the Nordreys) from his brother and was confirmed as Jarl by the King Harald Haarfagri circa Spring 875. In alliance with Thorstein the Red he conquered what is now Caithness and Sutherland and parts of Ross and Moray. Circa 892 he defeated Maelbrigte Tooth "the Scottish Earl" (? Mormaer of Moray) and cut off his head. He died of bloodpoisoning from the wound caused by Maelbrigteís tooth as the head dangled by Sigurdís knee, circa 892, and was buried at Sydero on the Dornoch Firth at the estuary of the Ekkialsbakki.
