He was the oldest of the three children. He had three half-brothers named Ivar, Rollo Rognvaldsson Duke of and Thori "The Silent". On hearing of his nephewís death, Jarl Ragnvald sent his eldest illegitimate son, Hallad, to Orkney and King Harald Haarfagri confirmed him as Jarl circa 893. He established himself in Hrossey, but found himself unable to defend the island and Caithness from pirates. "He abdicated the Earldom and took free-manís rank and sailed after that to Norway, and his action was thought most ridiculous."
