EARLDOM of ORKNEY [NOR] - subject to King of Norway until after 1379
On hearing of his nephewís death, Jarl Ragnvald sent his eldest illegitimate son, Hallad, to Orkney and King Harald Haarfagri confirmed him as Jarl circa 893. He established himself in Hrossey, but found himself unable to defend the island and Caithness from pirates. "He abdicated the Earldom and took free-manís rank and sailed after that to Norway, and his action was thought most ridiculous."
