Gilbert's father was Count Regnier II OF HAINULT and his mother was Adelaide OF BURGANDY. His paternal grandparents were Count/ Rainer I DE HAINAULT and Duchess/Duchess Hersent OF LORRAINE. He had a brother named Regnier III OF HAINAULT.General Notes
Credited with the first unification of the country, convertedthe Danes to Christianity, and conquered Norway. After hisBaptism his fathers pagan tomb was transformed into a Christianplace of worship.
Introduced Christianity into Denmark, he had the famous Jellingrune stone erected in his parent memory. He was fatally woundedduring a rebellion by his son and successor, Sveng I.
