Hugh Bigod, Knight, 2nd son, who succeeded his elder brother William (who was accidentally drowned sine prole, with the King's children, in the 20th year of Henry I), was mainly instrumental in raising Stephen, of Blois, to the throne upon the decease of Henry I. He married Juliana de Vere, daughter of Alberic, 2nd Baron de Vere, and his wife Adeliza de Clare, who was 12th in descent from Charlemagne's eldest son, Louis I, King of France.
