Thomas was born about 1449 in Dowth, Meath, Ireland. Thomas' father was John Netterville and his mother was Barnewall. His paternal grandparents were Nicholas Netterville and Mary Plunkett; his maternal grandparents were Christopher Barnewall and Elizabeth Plunkett. He had two brothers named Patrick and George.
