William de was born before 1084 in Mortagne-au-Perche, Orne, Normandy, France.  William de's father was Robert de Mortaigne , Earl of Cornwall and his mother was Maud de Montgomery.  His paternal grandparents were Harlevin (Herlouin) Viscomte de Conteville and Herleve (Arlette) de Falaise; his maternal grandparents were Roger de Montgomery , 1st Earl of Shrewsbury and Mabel de Talvas d' Alencon. He had three sisters named Emma de, Agnes de and Denise de.  He was the youngest of the four children. He had a half-sister named Miss de.  He died in 1140 in Bermondsey, London, England (as a Cluniac monk).
