Robert de was born about 1163 in Castle Montalt, Hawarden, Flintshire, England.  Robert de's father was Robert (Roger) de Mohaut , Constable of Chester and his mother was Leucha FitzNeel. He had two brothers named Eustace de and Roger de.  He was the youngest of the three children.
