John was born about 1257 in of Hingham & Hockering, Norfolk, England. John's father was William Marshal , Sir and his mother was Elizabeth de Ferrers. His paternal grandparents were John le Marshal , Sir and Aline de Rye; his maternal grandparents were William III de Ferrers , 5th Earl of Derby and Margaret de Quincy. He was an only child. Inherited the barony of Hockering in the County of Norfolk, England from his grandmother, Aline de Ria le Mareschal, as both his uncle John (dsp) and father William died before their mother, who held the barony.
