Ansel was born in 1153 in Pembroke, Pembrokeshire, Wale.  Ansel's father was John FitzGilbert Marshal and his mother was Sibyl De Salisbury.  His paternal grandparents were Gilbert FitzRobert Marshal and Daughter De Venuz; his maternal grandparents were Walter FitzEdward De Evereux and Sibilla Maud De Chaworth. He had three brothers and a sister, named John, Henry Marshal Bishop of, William Marshall Earl of and Margaret FitzGilbert. He had two half-brothers named Gilbert Fitzjohn and Walter.  He died at the age of 42 in 1195.
