William de was born in 1186 in Saffron Walden, Essex, England.  William de's father was Geoffrey FitzPiers , 3rd Earl of Essex and his mother was Beatrix de Say.  His paternal grandparents were Piers de Lutegareshale and Maud de Mandeville; his maternal grandmother was Aufrica of Huntingdon. He had a brother and a sister, named Geoffrey de and Maud.  He was the youngest of the three children. He had a half-brother and a half-sister, named John and Hawise.  He died in Shouldham Priory, Downham, Norfolk, England (Body).  He was buried in Walden Abbey, Saffron Walden, Norfolk, England (Heart).
