Maud de was born about 1128 in Diss, Norfolk, England.  Maud de's father was Richard "The Loyal" de Lucy , Justiciar-England and her mother was Rohese FitzRichard de Clare.  Her paternal grandparents were Adrian de Lucy and Aveline Goth; her maternal grandfather was Richard FitzRichard de Clare , Abbot of Ely. She had two brothers and two sisters, named William de, Geoffrey de, Aveline de and Alice de.  She was the second youngest of the five children.
