Gilbert was born in 0890 in Reims, Lorraine, France.  Gilbert's father was (Count) Regnier I "Longhals" Of Hainault (Count) and his mother was Hersent Of France. He had a brother named Regnier II Count Of.  He was the older of the two children. He had two half-sisters named Simphoraine De and Alberade De.  He died at the age of 49 on October 2nd, 0939 in Andernach, Rhineland, Prussia.
