He took the title King of Italy, which he bequeathed to his son (not by Marozia) Lothair II, the husband of Adelheid of Burgundy and the father of Emma, wife of Lothair of France and mother of Louis V. It was Lothair II's murder by Berengar II, who then tried to force Adelheid to marry his son, Adalbert, that drew upon Italy the first invasion of Otto the Great of Germany. A widower (of Edith of Wessex), he then married Adelheid himself; they were the parents of Otto II. Adalbert fled to Macon, where he married the heiress, Gerberga, and became the father of Count Otto-William.
