Hawise was born in Kendal, Westmoreland, England.  Hawise's father was Gilbert Fitz Remfrid and her mother was Hawise Helwise , Baroness Kendal/, Baroness Kendal/De Lancaster.  Her maternal grandparents were William II de Lancaster , Baron Kendal and Helwise De Stuteville. She had a brother named Roger Fitz.
