Margred verch Owain was born in 1123 in Aberffraw Castle, Angelesey, Wales.  Margred verch Owain's father was Owain Gwynedd ap Gruffudd , King of Gwynedd and her mother was Gwladus verch Llywarch. She had a brother and two sisters, named Iorwerth Drwyndwn ap, Gwenllian verch and Gwenllian II verch.  She was the second oldest of the four children. She had a half-sister named Angharad verch.
