Joan de was born about 1288 in Wilton Castle, Ross-on-Wye, Herefordshire, England.  Joan de's father was John 2nd Baron de Grey , of Wilton and her mother was Maud de Verdun.  Her paternal grandparents were Reynold 1st Baron de Grey , of Wilton, Sir and Maud de Longchamp , Heiress of Wilton; her maternal grandparents were John le Botiller de John le , Sir/, Sir and Eleanor de Bohun , Heiress of Debden. She had two brothers and a sister, named Henry 3rd Baron de, Roger 1st Baron de and Maud de.  She was the second youngest of the four children.  She died before April 5th, 1353 in Drayton Bassett, Staffordshire, England.
