Alice de was born about 1119 in Yorkshire, England. Alice de's father was Sir Walter de Gand , Lord of Folkingham/Lindsay and her mother was Matilda (Maud) de Brittany. Her paternal grandparents were Gilbert de Gand , Lord of Folkingham and Alice Countess de Montfort; her maternal grandparents were Stephen Count of Brittany , Baron of Richmond and Hawise Sourdeval. She had two brothers and a sister, named Gilbert de, Robert de and Miss de. She was the second oldest of the four children. She had a half-brother and a half-sister, named William de and Agnes de.
