Adele de was born about 1144 in Ghent, Flanders now Belgium. Adele de's father was Arnould de Ghent , Comte de Guines and her mother was Mahaut de St. Omer. Her paternal grandparents were Winemar Comte de Ghent and Gisela of Guines; her maternal grandparents were William II Chatelain de St. Omer and Melisende de Picquigny. She had a brother and a sister, named Baudoin II Comte de and Margaret de. She was the youngest of the three children.
