William IV was born about 1240 in Derby, Derbyshire, England.  William IV's father was William III de Ferrers , 5th Earl of Derby and his mother was Margaret de Quincy.  His paternal grandparents were William II de Ferrers , 4th Earl of Derby and Agnes of Chester , Lady of Chartley; his maternal grandparents were Roger de Quincy , 2nd Earl of Winchester and Helen of Galloway. He had a brother and four sisters, named Robert de, Elizabeth de, Joan de, Agnes de and Berta de.  He was the second oldest of the six children. He had five half-sisters named Isabel de, Agnes de, Maud (Matilda) de, Eleanor de and Joan de.  He died on December 20th, 1287 in Groby, Leicestershire, England.

They had a son and a daughter, named William V 1st Baron and Anne.
