John "Of Gaunt" Of ENGLAND DUKE OF LANCASTER
John "Of Gaunt" Of was born on June 24th, 1340 in
Abbaye de St Bavon, Ghent, Flandre-Orientale, Belgium. He died in
Leicester Castle, Leicester, Leicestershire, England. He was buried in
St. Paul's Cathedral, London, Middlesex, England.
General Notes
John was Duke of Lancaster at the time he went on the Cursades against Castile. His campaig n was haralded by a ceremony in which his nephew King Richard II recognized him as king of Ca stile, began on 9 Jul 1386, when he sailed from England. He withdrew to Gascony after receivi ng a rich indemnity in return for his renunciation of the crown.
