Walter was born in 1080 in Upton Scudmore, Wiltshire, England. Walter's father was Titus De Scudamore and his mother was Joyce De Clifford. His paternal grandparents were Sir Alexander De Scudamore and Jane Catchman; his maternal grandfather was Robert De Clifford. He had a sister named Pernel (or Petronilla). He was the older of the two children.
