William was born in 1186.  William's father was Earl of Essex Geoffrey FitzPiers De Mandeville Earl of Essex and his mother was Beatrice De Say. He had two sisters named Maud FitzGeoffrery and Saveric.  He was the second oldest of the three children. He had a half-brother and a half-sister, named John and Hawise.
