Bertha was born about 1218 in Thetford, Norfolk, England. Bertha's father was Earl of Derby William IV De Ferrers Earl of Derby and her mother was Agnes De Meschines. Her paternal grandparents were Earl of Derby Walkelin (William) De Ferrers Earl of Derby and Sybil De Braose; her maternal grandparents were Earl of Chester Hugh De Kevelioc De Meschines Earl of Chester and Bertrade De Montfort. She had a brother and two sisters, named William V, Ivette and Sibyl. She was the youngest of the four children.
