Reynald was born about 1008 in Croy, Picardy, Flanders. Reynald's father was Fulbert "The Tanner" De Falaise and his mother was Doda. His paternal grandparents were Thorgils Styrbjornsson and Sigrid. He had a brother and three sisters, named Walter, Herleva, Beatrice and De Falaise.
