Richard was born about 1194 in Altyre, Morayshire, Scotland. Richard's father was William Comyn , 1st Earl of Buchan and his mother was Sarah FitzHugh. His paternal grandparents were Richard Comyn , Justiciar of Scotland and Hextilda of Tynedale. He had a brother named Walter. He was the younger of the two children. He had a half-brother and three half-sisters, named Alexander, Idoine, Margaret and Elizabeth. He died in July 1249 in Badenoch, Inverness, Scotland.-
