2nd Lord (Baron) Cobham (of Sterborough). [Burke's Peerage]
------------------------------------
BARONY OF COBHAM OF STERBOROUGH (II)
REYNOLD (DE COBHAM), LORD COBHAM, only son and heir born 1348, being aged 13 at his father's death, had seizin of his father's lands and of his mother's dower lands 5 February 1369/70, having proof his age and done homage. He, like his father, distingushed himself in the wars of Gascony and France. He was summoned to Parliament from 8 January 1370/1 to 6 Oct. (1372). He married, 1stly, Elizabeth, widow of John, 4th LORD FFRRERS of Chartley (who died 2 April 1367), and before that of Fulk (LE STRANGE), LORD STRANGE (of Blackmere), daughter of Ralph (DE STAFFORD), 1st EARL OF STAFFORD, by Margaret, daughter ancf heir of Hugh (D'AUDLEY), EARL OF GLOUCESTER. She died 7 August 1376. He married, 2ndly, in 1380 (pardon for m. without lic. 10 Aug.), Eleanor, widow of John (D'ARUNDEL), LORD ARUNDEL (1377 to 1379), and, according to modern doctrine, suo jure, BARONESS MAUTRAVERS, being daughter of Sir John MAUTRAVERS [son and heir apparent of John, 1st Lord Mautravers]. This marriage being within the third degree (a), absolution for it was given by a bull from the Pope, 11 November 1384, and the issue legitimated. He died 6 July 1403 (a few days before the battle of Shrewsbury), and was buried at Lingfield. M.I. Will, in which he styles himself Raynald de Cobbeham, Sr. de Stresburgh, dated 8 September 1400, proved at Canterbury 13 July 1403. His widow, who was born 1345, died 10 January 1404/5. Will, in which, curiously enough, she styles herself (only) Alianor Arondell en pur ma viduite, dated 26 September 1404, at Lytchett Matravers, and proved at Maidstone 16 January 1404/5, directing her burial to be at Lewes Priory, where mon tres honorable seigneur John Arundell lies. [Complete Peerage III:353-4, XIV:196, (transcribed by Dave Utzinger)]
(a) Her grandfather, Lord Mautravers, had m. Ela, sister of Thomas, Lord Berkeley, the maternal grandfather of Lord Cobham.
Note: the death date for Elizabeth de Stafford given above, "7 Aug 1376", does not agree with CP V:314 and AR, line 61-33, which give "7 Aug 1375". As the 1375 date is supported by a note, I assume the 1376 date is a small error.
