Roger de was born in 1116 in Tunbridge Castle, Kent, England.  Roger de's father was Richard FitzGilbert de Clare , Earl of Hertford and his mother was Adeliza Alice le Meschin.  His paternal grandparents were Gilbert Fitz Richard de Clare , Earl Hertford and Adeliza de Claremont; his maternal grandparents were Ranulph le Meschin , 3rd Earl of Chester and Lucy (Lucia) of Mercia. He had three sisters named Adeliza de, Rohese de and Adles.  He was the second oldest of the four children. He had a half-brother and a half-sister, named Roger de and Isabel de.  He died at the age of 57 in 1173 in Oxfordshire, England.  He was buried in Eynsham Priory, Oxfordshire, England.

‌Roger de and Maud de were married in a religious ceremony about 1153 in Dalling, Norfolk, England.  They had a son and two daughters, named Richard de, Elana de and Aveline de.
