Gilbert de was born on September 21st, 1100 in Tunbridge, Kent, England.  Gilbert de's father was Gilbert Fitz Richard de Clare , Earl Hertford and his mother was Adeliza de Claremont.  His paternal grandparents were Richard FitzGilbert 1st Earl de Clare and Rohese Giffard; his maternal grandparents were Hugh de Creil Count of Clermont and Margaret de Roucy. He had two brothers and five sisters, named Baldwin FitzGilbert de, Richard FitzGilbert de, Hawise de, Agnes de, Alice de, Margaret de and Rohesia de.  He was the second youngest of the eight children.  He died in Carmarthen, Carmarthenshire, Wales.  He was buried in Tintern Abbey, Chapel Hill, Monmouthsire, England.
