Avice de was born about 1058 in Brionne, Eure, Normandy, France.  Avice de's father was Richard FitzGilbert 1st Earl de Clare and her mother was Rohese Giffard. She had three brothers and three sisters, named Richard FitzRichard de, Gilbert Fitz Richard de, Robert, Rohese FitzRichard de, Ronais FitzGilbert de and Avoise de.  She was the second oldest of the seven children.
