Roger was born about 1163 in Longueville, Channel Isles.  Roger's father was Walter De Walter Cantelou and his mother was Mrs. Walter 1128 Cantelou.  His paternal grandparents were Walter Cantilupe and Mrs. Walter 1102 Cantilupe. He had two brothers and two sisters, named William I De, Fulk, Maud De and Sibilla.  He was the second youngest of the five children.
