Maud De was born about 1252 in Tonebridge, Suffolk, England.  Maud De's father was Richard de CLARE EARL OF GLOUCESTER and her mother was Maud de LACY.  Her paternal grandparents were Gilbert de CLARE EARL OF GLOUCESTER and Isabel MARSHALL; her maternal grandparents were John de LACY Earl of Lincoln and Margaret De QUINCY Countess of Lincoln. She had four brothers and four sisters, named Gilbert "the Red Earl" de, Thomas de, Bevis (Bogo) (Benet) De, Robert (Richard) De, Isabel De, Margaret De, Roese (Rohesia) De and Eglentine De.  She was the third youngest of the nine children.
