At about this time he became Canon of Wells & Archdeacon of York. When Edward returned from the Holy Land after the death of Henry III he was appointed Lord Chancellor in which office he continued until his death. Elected Bishop of Bath & Wells, Jan. 1275. Dear Newsgroup ~
I recently posted that Joan, wife of Llywelyn ap Iowerth, received several properties in marriage, among them the manors of Bidford, co. Warwick, and Suckley, co. Worcester. Bidford and Suckley are known to have passed to Joan's daughter, Ellen, wife of Robert de Quincy, and then onto Ellen's Wake heirs. However, this past week, I learned that the Wake family subsequently conveyed or subinfeuded both of these manors to Bishop Robert Burnell, whose nephew and heir, Sir Philip Burnell, married Maud Fitz Alan, a great-granddaughter of Gladys Dhu and Ralph de Mortimer. The manors thereafter show up in the hands of the Burnell family (see, for example, Index of Placita de Banco, Part II, pp. 685, 723).
I have no idea why the properties were conveyed to the Burnell family.
However, I find it interesting that two manors which formed Joan's maritagium ended up in the hands of descendants of Gladys Dhu.
Best always, Douglas Richardson, Salt Lake City, Utah
