Sir William Spileman succeeded his brother, Peter. Sir William was a
minor at his father's death, and, apparently, at that of his brother.
Fo r some years thereafter the Spileman lands were held by the Sheriff of
the Co unty. The following records refer to this estate.
Fine Roll, 16 Henry III, 123 1-1232, Membrane 6.) William Spileman made a
fine with the King of 100 shilli ngs for having seisin of the lands which
William Spileman, his father, whose heir he is, held of the King by
sergeantry in the bailiwick of the Sheriff of Southampton on the day he
died, and which descend to him by hereditary right , and the King took his
homage therefor. And the Sheriff of Southampton was c ommanded that, when
he had taken security from the aforesaid William for the said 100
shillings, he should cause the said William, the son and heir, to ha ve
full seisin, as is aforesaid, of all the lands which belonged to the said
William, his father, on the day on which he died, in his bailiwick; and
tha t, when he had received the aforesaid security, he should notify the
same to the Sheriff of Wilts, to whom the King had sent commands as to
the lands in h is bailiwick.
