Avoise de was born about 1072 in Brionne, Eure, Normandy, France.  Avoise de's father was Richard FitzGilbert 1st Earl de Clare and her mother was Rohese Giffard. She had three brothers and three sisters, named Richard FitzRichard de, Gilbert Fitz Richard de, Robert, Rohese FitzRichard de, Avice de and Ronais FitzGilbert de.  She was the second youngest of the seven children.
