Thomas, feudal Lord of Berkeley; inherited all of his [elder brother Robert's] lands on latter's death (dsp in 13 May 1220) except Berkeley, which he did not obtain till 1223.  [Burke's Peerage]

HOLDERS of the CASTLE of BERKELEY (VII)

Thomas de Berkeley, feudal Lord of Berkeley, brother and heir; who "may bee called Thomas the Observer or Temporiser", b. about 1170.  He obtained livery of his brother's lands, but not till 1223, of the Castle of Berkeley.  He sustained many suits at law, and by his prudent conduct greatly improved his estate.  He m. about 1217, Joan, daughter of Sir Ralph de Somery, of Dudley, co. Worcester, by Margaret, sister of William (Marshal), Earl of Pembroke, and daughter of John FitzGilbert, styled also John the Marshal.  He d. 29 Nov 1243, aged about 73, and was buried at St. Augustine's, aforesaid.  His widow was living 1273-4.  [Complete Peerage II:126-7, XIV:87]

Thomas de Berkeley, in the 8th of Henry III (1223-4), upon giving his two nephews as pledges for his fidelity, had restitution of Berkeley Castle. His lordship m. about the year 1217, Joan, dau. of Ralph de Somery, Lord of Campden, co. Gloucester, and niece of William Marshal, Earl of Pembroke, and dying, aged seventy-six, November 29, 1243, left issue, Maurice, his heir; Thomas, d. s. p.; Robert; Henry, d. s. p.; William; Richard; and one dau. Margaret, wife of Sir Anselm Basset.
