John was born about 1249 in Bernard Castle, Gainford, Durham, England.  John's father was John De BALIOL LORD OF BARNARD CASTLE and his mother was Dervorgilla De GALLOWAY.  His paternal grandparents were Hugh De BALIOL and Cecily De La FONTAINE; his maternal grandparents were Alan De GALLOWAY LORD OF GALLOWAY and Margaret of Huntington. He had four brothers and six sisters, named Alexander De, Alan De, William De, Hugh De, Cecilia De, Eleanor De, Mary De, Ada De, Margaret De and Baliol.  He died in Bailleul, Nord, France.  He was buried in St Waast, Bailleul, Nord, France.

‌John and Isabel were married in a religious ceremony about 1280 in Of, Lewes, Surrey, England.  They had two sons and two daughters, named Edward, Henry, Agnes Maud and Anne.
