Philip ap was born in 1279 in Wernddu, Monmouthshire, Wales.  Philip ap's father was Adam "Fychan" ap Adam , of Wernddu and his mother was Miss verch Dafydd.  His maternal grandparents were David Burchill , of Llanfair Cilgedin and Miss Turberville. He had two sisters named Crisli verch and Dyddgu verch.  He was the youngest of the three children.
